A Facebook post falsely attributes sensational remarks to Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, claiming he accused opposition politicians Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu of using witchcraft to attract crowds and said the UPND would reject an election victory obtained through “witchcraft.” iVerify Zambia found no evidence that Mr. Kawana made these remarks. He has categorically denied the claim.
Claim
On 13 July 2026, a Facebook page called The Candidates published a post claiming that the Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary and Chief Government Spokesperson, Mr. Thabo Kawana, said that National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) leader Brian Mundubile and his counterpart Makebi Zulu were using witchcraft to attract large crowds to their political rallies. The post further alleged that Mr. Kawana said that if Mr. Mundubile were to win the election, the UPND would not accept the outcome because witchcraft is unconstitutional in Zambia.
