No, Thabo Kawana did not make the remarks attributed to him about Davis Mwila attack

A Facebook post alleged that Thabo Kawana knew the individuals who attacked Davis Mwila and claimed that the assailants were close associates of Brian Mundubile. It further attributed to Mr Kawana advice that Mr Mwila should reconcile with his attackers rather than involve President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND in the matter.

Claim

On 13 October 2026, The Candidates Facebook page published a post claiming that Thabo Kawana, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Media, knew the individuals who attacked Davis Mwila, a Tonse Alliance member, at the court. The post further alleged that Mr Kawana identified the assailants as close associates of Brian Mundubile and advised Mr Mwila to reconcile with them instead of involving President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND in the dispute.

Note: We have excluded the link to the original post containing the misinformation to avoid further amplifying the false claim.

Verdict: False

Rating Justification

There is no credible evidence that Thabo Kawana made the statement attributed to him. Furthermore, Mr Kawana publicly dismissed the allegation on his official Facebook page by sharing an image of the claim stamped “FAKE”, accompanied by the statement, “We distance ourselves from this.” His response directly refutes the attribution.

Evidence: Thabo Kawana’s Facebook response

Conclusion

The available evidence does not support the claim that Thabo Kawana made the alleged statement about the attack on Davis Mwila. Mr Kawana publicly disowned the claim, describing it as fake. The post risks misleading the public by falsely attributing remarks to a senior government official and encouraging political speculation about the incident without credible supporting evidence.
