2024 video misrepresented as fresh arrest of Emmanuel Jay Banda

An old video from 2024 has been repurposed and presented as evidence of a purported 2026 arrest of former Petauke Member of Parliament, Ennanuel Jay Jay Banda. The available evidence does not substantiate the claim that Emmanuel Jay Banda was captured by the Zambia Army or that President Hakainde Hichilema ordered his killing.

CLAIM

A Facebook post published by Hadodi Hachisanga the Return on 2 September 2026 claims that Hon. Emmanuel Jay Banda was captured by the Zambia Army and that President Hakainde Hichilema had ordered that he be killed using live ammunition. Separately, a Facebook post by Flying Eagles claims that former Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu had “arrested Hon Emmanuel Jay Banda for the second time”, using a video of Mwiimbu as evidence.

Verdict: iVerify Zambia found the claims to be false and misleading.

Rating Justification

In a response shared in the media police WhatsApp group, Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said he had no reports of Hon. Emmanuel Jay Banda being captured by the Zambia Army or of any instructions for him to be killed.

iVerify Zambia also established that the video shared by Flying Eagles is old and unrelated to the alleged September 2026 arrest.

The video was originally published on 20 November 2024 and shows then Minister of Home Affairs Jack Mwiimbu speaking about the apprehension of Emmanuel Jay Banda in Zimbabwe.

According to the original report accompanying the video, following Banda’s escape, authorities obtained information that he had been renting a flat in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he was subsequently apprehended.

The video therefore does not provide evidence that Banda was arrested for a second time in September 2026. Instead, footage from November 2024 has been paired with a new caption, creating the misleading impression that the video depicts a recent arrest.

Furthermore, the posts provide no evidence to substantiate the allegation that President Hakainde Hichilema ordered the Zambia Army to kill Banda using live ammunition.

VERDICT: False and Misleading

The claim that Emmanuel Jay Banda was captured by the Zambia Army and that President Hakainde Hichilema ordered that he be killed is unsupported by the available evidence.

The video presented as evidence of a second arrest is from November 2024, when Banda was apprehended in Zimbabwe. It does not show or establish a second arrest in September 2026.

The posts therefore misrepresent old footage as evidence of a current event and attach an unsubstantiated allegation to it.
